A Major Milestone for Brighter Futures
“We are so grateful and humbled with the support of all three levels of governments in bringing our vision to fruition. This project is about creating safe, supportive spaces where children can begin to heal and build a brighter future.” – Wade Johnston, Executive Director, Chisholm Services for Children
Brighter Futures:
Supported by Our Partners
$5.25 million from the federal government, through the Affordable Housing Fund (2M Repayable)

$500,000 from the Nova Scotia Department of Opportunities and Social Development
$200,000 from the Halifax Regional Municipality’s Affordable Housing Grant Program
A Vision for Brighter Futures
Our vision is to support children’s brighter futures by building two new specialized homes that will be responsive to their needs, with access to outdoor play areas and land-based therapeutic recreation spaces. The homes will be supported by a Chisholm hub that will offer our after-school literacy program, trauma informed care group training, and will be a resource for our community.
Why This Investment Is Needed
Children across Nova Scotia continue to face complex issues within the family such as neglect, abuse, and family instability. Approximately 4,100 Nova Scotian children per year require protection (One Chance to be a Child Report). Many experience complex trauma early in life. These experiences can shape emotional development, learning, and long-term wellbeing. Demand for home based care, trauma-informed programming, and literacy supports continues to grow across Nova Scotia. Chisholm’s current facilities limit capacity and flexibility at a time when children’s needs are becoming more complex. The Brighter Futures campus represents a long-term investment in stability, prevention, and community-based care.
